APPLICATION FOR THE SUMMER NIST SURF 2017 (GAITHERSBURG)
Every year the Resource Center for Science and Engineering of the University of Puerto Rico through the Puerto Rico Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, coordinates the attendance of undergraduate students for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The National Institute of Standards and Technology is one of the most prestigious national laboratories in the United States.
On the last link above, you will find a copy of the application and general information regarding the internship and the available research laboratories. The applications CANNOT be sent independently to NIST, only the PR-LSAMP is authorized to process and send the applications that will be received in our office from the date of this communication until February 6th, 2017. This will allow us to evaluate and prepare all the necessary documentation that will be submitted to NIST. The applications must comply with all the specifications in the NIST SURF Gaithersburg 2017 application form. All the recommendation letters, evidence of citizenship, curriculum vitae, personal statements, and transcript must be sealed and addressed to Prof. Javier Figueroa, PR-LSAMP Academic Coordinator. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED.
ALL DOCUMENTS AND RECOMMENDATION LETTERS MUST BE IN ENGLISH. DOCUMENTS IN SPANISH WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Students interested in participating in the internship will need to send all required documentation in a manila envelope via certified mail, (5 days prior to February 6, 2017 to ensure mail arrives on time), to:
P.O. Box 23334
San Juan P.R. 00931-3334
Or in person at our RCSE office located at:
Facundo Bueso Building
Resource Center for Science and Engineering
Río Piedras Campus
The basic criteria for applications are a GPA of 3.0 or more. Once the federal agency selects the students who will participate in the internship, they will receive a stipend of approximately $5,500.00 (for a 10 weeks internship). The award will be divided in 3 partial payments of approximately $1,833.33 through the entire summer internship duration. Lodging expenses will be covered, and airfare will also be covered up to a maximum of $500.00.
Once the student is accepted by the NIST-SURF program, the student cannot cancel their participation. Every student must have an active email address, since all communications with NIST will be through email.
REMEMBER THAT ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE IN OUR OFFICE IN FULL BY THE DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 6th, 2017.
